So, by now I'm sure you've all heard about the recent incarceration of Buju Banton, whose real name Mark Anthony Myrie! I'm not even going to lie...I was beyond shocked! I have been Buju fans years. In fact he is hands down my favourite Jamaican artiste....period!I vividly remember the first time I saw Buju perform! My Mommy....yes my Mommy...carried me to Reggae Sunspash to see him live and in action! Mind yuh this is before he became a "conscious" artiste so it was the gold ole 'Big it up" and "Batty Rider" tunes! I've been a Buju fan since then. I adore his entire collection...from the "slack" tunes to the more political laced melodies. He is diverse and undeniably talented! Til Sliloh is in my top five favourite albums of all time!
The million dollar question:
Why you should an accomplished artiste decide to dabble in the drug trade? My only conclusion ca be greed! He was already making over US$60,000 per show/performance! Greed...substance abuse? I don't understand eh! Buju is currently charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, along with two other individuals! I will continue to follow the case, as the story develops! In a recent article, it states that Banton remains hopeful despite the charges against him!
